MY TOP MUSIC OF THE WEEK (9-5)
All titles issued in the US except where noted.
1. The Best Of TRACEY ULLMAN **2 weeks #1**
(Rhino - 1992)
Tracey finds herself at #1 on my weekly list for the first time since December 2007. It's one of my favorites yet with all the other music in my collection I put her on the backburner several times. Her music style was inspired by the girl groups of the 60's. She was a one-hit wonder in 1984 when They Don't Know made Billboard's Hot 100 reaching #8 (it missed the Adult Contemporary Top 10 by one notch). The Best Of Tracey Ullman is made up of her entire first album You Broke My Heart In 17 Places (1983), five songs from her second effort You Caught Me Out (1984), and 4 non-album A-sides. I broke it out after starting rehearsals for a local production of Beehive, a musical devoted to the evolution of 60's music by top female artists. This disc has some of the catchiest tunes and covers I've ever heard and I'm inclined to make it more prominent in my listening.
2. Panic Of Girls - BLONDIE
(EMI - 2011) UK
3. Voulez-Vous: Deluxe Edition - ABBA
(Polar - 2010) Europe
Expanded edition of 1979 album
4. Greatest Hits (And More) - HELEN REDDY
(Capitol - 1987)
*5. Winter Light - LINDA RONSTADT
(Elektra - 1993)
*6. My Colouring Book - AGNETHA FALTSKOG
(WEA - 2004) Sweden
7. Will You Be Staying After Sunday? - THE PEPPERMINT RAINBOW
(Rev-Ola - 2008) UK; Expanded edition of 1969 album
8. These Dreams: HEART's Greatest Hits
(Capitol - 1997)
9. Summer Dream - SWEET PEOPLE
(Spectrum - 1990) Germany
10. Relish - JOAN OSBORNE
(Mercury - 1996)
* Also inspired by my participation in Beehive with its 60's covers.

9. Remind - BROTHERHOOD OF MAN
(Arcade Music - 1997) Holland
10. The DONNA SUMMER Anthology
(Casablanca/Chronicles - 1993)
Notes:
The presence of three Fleetwood Mac albums on my list this week is, of course, in light of the death of Bob Welch. After Donna Summer's passing, I didn't think I could be any more sad as far as musical favorites, but this one cuts deeper for me.
Fleetwood Mac are my favorite music group after ABBA. Whenever I listen to a studio album of theirs, it's usually from Bob's era. His and Christine McVie's vocals complimented each other amazingly with their cool, smooth styles. Bob will be greatly missed.

THE VERY BEST OF BARBRA STREISAND (A NEW ORIGINAL)
Last week I was asked to play music for a couple of events at the hospital where I volunteer. Easy listening was requested and Barbra Streisand was one of the artists I played. I hadn't listened to her in ages and it made me want to more. An idea came over me to compile a single-disc career-spanning retrospective since none has been commercially released. I used Billboard magazine as a guide and put together 19 of Barbra's 21 top 40 hits. The exceptions are Where You Lead and Kiss Me In The Rain because I don't have them on compact disc...yet. However, the former is included in a medley on my compilation.
Following is my end result. The songs are in order from highest to lowest charting:
Woman In Love
Love Theme From "A Star Is Born" (Evergreen)
The Way We Were
No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) (with Donna Summer)
You Don't Bring Me Flowers (with Neil Diamond)
Guilty (with Barry Gibb)
The Main Event/Fight
My Heart Belongs To Me
People
Stoney End
I Finally Found Someone (with Bryan Adams)
What Kind Of Fool (with Barry Gibb)
Comin' In And Out Of Your Life
Love Theme From "Eyes Of Laura Mars" (Prisoner)
'Til I Loved You (with Don Johnson)
Songbird
Second Hand Rose
Sweet Inspiration/Where You Lead
The Way He Makes Me Feel
I'm looking forward to reacquainting myself with my Streisand collection in general.

Sandi Patty was #1 for 2 weeks last year with Where The Nails Were, another song I was learning for church.
Barry Manilow becomes the highest-charting male solo artist on my list this week since Lindsey Buckingham was #1 in 2008 with his Go Insane disc.

#2 by Brotherhood Of Man was compiled by a member of a Yahoo music group I belong to.
#3 and #8 by Champange are albums originally released in Holland. Not wanting to spend a lot of money for the imports, I put them together myself. All songs from both albums appear on the 2007 CD import, "The Best Of Champagne," which was my first purchase by the group.
For my home edit of #5 by Fleetwood Mac I omitted the last track, a song written and performed by Mick Fleetwood. It's spoken-word and I think it takes away from the flow of the rest of the disc.
#9 is a collection of R&B hits.

FLEETWOOD MAC: Chapters (An Original Compilation)
A few years ago, I brainstormed about a Fleetwood Mac compilation that would best represent the group's career on a single disc. Following is what I came up with. Titled "Chapters," I selected one track by each of Fleetwood Mac's 15 recording members (original bassist, Bob Brunning, never recorded with the band so isn't included). I had intended to revise the disc because I have a better title in mind and one track is slightly cut off at the beginning. Nonetheless, here's the tracklisting with photos and information:
"I Believe My Time Ain't Long" (1967): Written by Duster Bennett and sung by Jeremy Spencer (pictured), this was the group's first single release and later issued on the UK compilation "The Pious Bird Of Good Omen" in 1969. Another version was recorded for Fleetwood Mac's 1968 album, "Mr. Wonderful" under the title "Dust My Broom." The latter version was included on the box set "25 Years: The Chain" in 1992 under the original title. The version I used comes from the box set "The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions 1967-1969."
"Oh Well (Part 1)" (1969): Written and sung by Peter Green for the album "Then Play On," this was Fleetwood Mac's very first chart single on Billboard's Hot 100 reaching #55. I used the single version on my compilation as a matter of space. The band Rockets had a #30 hit with their cover in 1979. Later versions were recorded by Lindsey Buckingham and Billy Burnette with the group.
"Searching For Madge" (1969): This is an instrumental from "Then Play On" written by Mick Fleetwood.
"Fighting For Madge" (1969): This instrumental written by John McVie follows Mick's song on "Then Play On."
"Jewel Eyed Judy" (1970): Written and sung by Danny Kirwan, this was the only single from Fleetwood Mac's album, "Kiln House."
"Sentimental Lady" (1972): This was a single from Fleetwood Mac's album, "Bare Trees," written and sung by Bob Welch. Bob had a #8 hit with the song as a solo artist in 1977.
"The Derelict" (1973): This was written and sung by Dave Walker for the album, "Penguin."
"Caught In The Rain" (1973): This is an instrumental written by Bob Weston for "Penguin."
"You Make Loving Fun" (1977): This was a #9 hit for Fleetwood Mac written and sung by Christine McVie for "Rumours." The version I used is a rough draft from the 2004 edition of the same album.
"Go Your Own Way" (1980): This was a #10 hit for Fleetwood Mac in 1977 written and sung by Lindsey Buckingham for "Rumours." I took this version from "Fleetwood Mac Live."
"Stand On The Rock" (1990): This song was written and sung by Rick Vito for "Behind The Mask."
"Hard Feelings" (1990): This was a single from "Behind The Mask" written and sung by Billy Burnette.
"Winds Of Change" (1995): This was written by Kit Hain and sung by Bekka Bramlett (pictured) for the album "Time."
"Blow By Blow" (1995): This was written and sung by Dave Mason for "Time."
"Dreams" (2003): This was Fleetwood Mac's only #1 hit recorded for the 1977 album, "Rumours." Written and sung by Stevie Nicks, I took this version from the CD companion to "Live In Boston."

#1 by Carly Simon is part of an idea I have to showcase her complete singles. Several compilations have been released over the years but a few chart songs have been omitted.
I listened to the first disc of #2 by Whitney Houston (entitled Cool Down for her ballad hits) in her memory.
#3 by Carly Simon is a new purchase. I only read about it this past week while reseaching singles for my home project. It's comprised of hits and album tracks from her years with Elektra and Warner Bros. Records, 1971-1983. There are 3 discs (30 songs total) packaged in a special tin.
#8 is an import compilation. The year of release isn't listed.
#11 was sent to me as an early birthday gift. It's recorded by the London cast and based on the movie starring Patrick Swayze. The music and lyrics were written by Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) and Glenn Ballard. The show is set to open on Broadway in the Spring.
#12 is another gift and and based on the movie of the same name. It's prodominantly made up of 70's and 80's pop and disco covers.
#13 includes the first solo recordings by Enya. She performs 11 of the soundtrack's 16 songs. The remainder of tracks were recorded by Edith Piaf and The Jazz Club.

#7 is a compilation of hits from 1979 to 1993.
#11 is a live recording featuring performances by Anne Cochran, Dave Koz, Olivia Newton-John, and Donny Osmond.

18. 21 - ADELE (2011)
Notes:
#1 is said by numerous sources to be the first of two albums Clannad recorded with Enya as a member. However, she isn't credited on the disc. Odd.
#7 is a cassette I put together of songs from Fleetwood Mac's 90's releases Behind The Mask (1990), 25 Years: The Chain (1992), and Time (1995). This collection could see an update on CD to include music from The Dance (1997). Stay tuned.
#8 is a CD I put together combining Linda Ronstadt's Greatest Hits (1976) and Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 (1980) albums. Rhino Music later had the same idea and issued this commercially in 2007. So where are my royalties (ha ha)?
#9 includes two previously released songs, Theme From Harry's Game (featured in the film Patriot Games) and In A Lifetime (a duet with U2's Bono).
#11 was compiled by a member of a Yahoo discussion group I belong to.
#17 is a CD of instrumentals. I met Tim Janis in Portland, Maine while on a cruise to Nova Scotia in 2008. He autographed my copy of Coastal America.

15. With Love - MICHAEL CHAPDELAINE (1995)
16. Pure Moods III - VARIOUS ARTISTS (2000)
***********************************************************************************
Notes:
I'm not, as a rule, very big on today's music. Adele (#1) is an exception. Her white soul sound and big voice is quite appealing. I think "Rolling In The Deep" is one of the most amazing songs to come out in recent years.
#4 by Enya is a mini-album of 4 songs taken from a Christmas edition of her 2005 release, "Amarantine."
I listened to #5 as a memorial to Bob Weston who passed away January 3rd. He was a guitarist with Fleetwood Mac in 1973 and recorded two albums with them that year. Incidentally, he was fired for having an affair with Mick Fleetwood's then wife.
While on Christmas vacation, I heard the song "Christmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses. It was one I had forgotten about. I liked it so much that I bought the #8 entry this week. This also includes their only chart hit, "I Know What Boys Like," as well as the full version of their theme from the 80's sitcom, "Square Pegs."
#15 is a collection of acoustic guitar instrumentals released by Time-Life Music.
#16 is a collection of music by new age artists. The series has inspired a renewed interest in Clannad (#2) for me. They were an Irish band consisting of Enya's relatives, brothers Ciaran and Pol Brennan, sister Moya Brennan, and twin uncles Noel and Padraig Duggan. Enya was a member for two albums in 1980 and 1982.

Fun facts:
My #1 of 2010, "THE MANHATTAN TRANSFER Anthology: Down In Birdland" was at the top of my weekly list for 5 weeks. This year's #1 by THE HUMAN LEAGUE ran the same number of weeks.
SANDI PATTY is the only Contemporary Christian artist to be #1 on my list. I was learning the song for a tenebrae service at church earlier this year.
I had 31 total #1 titles this year. I wanted an even-numbered list, so bumped from it is a compilation I put together called "Pieces Of 80s" by various artists. It's a collection of 40 a-side singles I bought in the 80s.
The self-titled disc by THE GROOP is in the top 10 on my year-end list for the 4th year in a row, the only one to do so since I started the list online in 2006. It was my top title in 2008 staying at #1 for 16 weeks. It was #1 for 4 weeks in 2009 and 1 week in 2010 and 2011. It is the longest-running #1 on my list.
